تتعدد انواع الاحجار الكريمة و تختلف من ناحية الوانها وشفافيتها و المواد المكونة لها وتتكون أساساً من مادة السليكا مع وجود بعض الشوائب المعدنية..اختلافها يكمن في الشوائب المكونة لها مع مادة السليكا.. وهذا ينتج عنه اختلاف درجة شفافيتها و بذلك اختلاف ألوانها ..وبعض الأحجار الكريمة قد تتحد في تكونها مع عناصر أخرى أو تكون في صورتها الحرة، مثل الياقوت والزمرد والألماس الذي يوجد في على اعماق كبيرة من باطن الارض،
الزمرد يتكون اساسا من سيليكات البريليوم والألومنيوم, يوجد في مناجم بين الصخور الصلدة والرخام بخلاف معظم الأحجار الكريمة, لونه أخضر غامق عميق وشفاف, ويحتل المرتبة الثالة من حيث الأهمية. يكتسب لونه الأخضر لوجود كميات ضئيلة من الكروم أو الحديد, وبالمقارنة بالأوزان يعتبر الأعلى قيمة بين الأحجار الكريمة, خاصة عندما يتخلله عروق من أملاح معدنية أخرى, إن أحجار الزُّمُرُّد الكاملة لنادرة جدا، وإذا وُجدت تكون أغلى من الماس. والزُّمُرُّد الأزرق أغلى من الزُّمُرَّد ذي اللون الأصفر.

Don't be reluctant to remove your rings:
Expert jewelers all agree the most common cause of jewelry decay is continuous wear. The oils from the body as well as shed skin, lotions and chemicals all collect in the small spaces of the mountings creating a corrosive grime that will damage precious metals and the emeralds. It is recommended that emerald rings should be frequently removed and polished with a soft clean dry cloth, such as cotton or linen. This will remove residue from the surface of the emerald and help maintain its beauty and luster.
Clean your emeralds rings thoroughly at least twice a year:
The best way to accomplish this is with a mild soap and water solution. Harsh detergents should be avoided when cleaning your rings. A mild cleansing agent such as Ivory or Woolite is recommended. Gently scrub your ring with a soft bristled tooth-brush or jewelry brush. Be sure to use lukewarm water as it works better for loosening dirt and grime. Pay special attention to the underside of the setting when scrubbing working the brush into all the small areas where dirt can deposit. Soaking emerald rings is not advised. Once finished scrubbing rinse with cold water. Cold water reduces the sudsing action and safely washes away any detergent residue. After rising immediately dry your emerald jewelry with a soft clean cloth.
Proper storage of your emeralds:
When washing dishes wear latex gloves to protect your rings or remove them. Anytime you are working with your hands in situations that may scratch, chip or dull your emeralds it is wise to remove and store them properly. Emeralds are not as hard as diamonds, rubies or sapphires.Therefore, it is important to store them separately where they will not be subjected to scratching and chipping. If you have limited space in your jewelery box you can place your emeralds in a felt bag to protect them. If space is not a problem they should always be stored in a separate compartment away from other jewelry.
